Making Disciples Is About Moving Towards Jesus

In order to fulfill our Mission of “making disciples”, we must first DEFINE “disciple”. We define a “disciple” of Jesus as follows:

A DISCIPLE is a person who has trusted in and who is learning to be and do like Jesus Christ by WORSHIPPING Him in all of life, living in COMMUNITY with other disciples, and being on His MISSION in the world.

Becoming a disciple of Jesus is never completed, and we are all in it together. This requires a life of rhythms(practices) that keep us moving towards Jesus.

Making DISCIPLES, then, is made up of the rhythms(practices) that the Church undertakes to move people towards being and doing like Jesus. While movement towards Jesus can be a difficult reality to measure, we can see the marks of this movement in the life of a DISCIPLE. Below are the marks of a DISCIPLE that we desire to see in the DISCIPLES that make up Lansdowne Alliance Church, as well as the ways that the Elders and Leaders of LAC plan to help these DISCIPLES continue to move towards Jesus. These marks are divided into the three categories of WORSHIP, COMMUNITY, and MISSION. On the next page, these marks will be listed as demonstrated below:

Below, you will find some of the ways we hope to see God move thru us as we are faithful to live in the rhythms listed below.

MARKS OF A DISCIPLE are in bold

HOW WE MOVE TOWARDS THIS MARK is in italics

WORSHIP

  • A commitment to outwardly express worship for God with other disciples by gathering regularly for corporate worship. (Psa 149, Eph 5, Col 3)

  • Worship gatherings that are engaging and meaningful on Sundays(age-appropriate teaching, Biblical expressions of corporate worship) as well as occasional special services and/or meetings for prayer, worship, etc.

  • A growing desire to walk in holiness with Jesus as Lord by spending daily time in prayer and Bible study.(1 Peter 1:14-16, Luke 5:16, Psalm 119:103)

  • Resources(age-appropriate) for Bible reading as well as encouragement to do so in preaching. Elders, Small Group leaders, and Teachers(Kid ministry, Youth ministry, classes) who will take initiative to help those who are not engaged in personal Bible reading and prayer.

  • A growing desire to submit all of life to Jesus in obedience to Him. (John 14:15, Matthew 28:18-20)

  • Opportunities to serve and give, and encouragement and training to do so thru preaching, classes, and Small Group leaders and Elders who will encourage and exhort towards this end.

COMMUNITY

  • A growing desire to be known in the community of faith at LAC.(Acts 2:46)

  • Smaller groups of people who meet regularly in order to build Biblical community (Small Groups), and corporate church events for the purpose of building community(“Family Feasts”, movie nights, game nights etc)

  • A growing knowledge and practice of one's individual spiritual gifts in order to serve the church family(Eph 4:11-16, Rom 12:6-8, 1 Cor 12: 8-10)

  • Preaching, classes, environments and mentoring that will equip disciples to know and practice their gifts.

  • A growing practice of care, hospitality, and stewardship for those in the community of LAC(Ideally as a part of a Small Group. Gal 6:10, John 13:34-35, Rom 12:10)

  • One person in each Small Group who is gifted and responsible for “care,” and Elders who are caring for, and stewarding the LAC community as a whole.

MISSION

  • A growing desire to see others who are far from God but close to them come to trust in Jesus. (Phillip and Nathanael in John 1)

  • Preaching, evangelism stories, and training that equips and encourages disciples to engage in personal evangelism.

  • A growing interest and desire to see the nations come to faith in Jesus thru Alliance missions(Matt 28:18-20).

  • Consistent exposure to Alliance missions in Sunday services, Small Group meetings, and opportunities to engage personally in International Ministry.

  • A growing practice of Biblical hospitality towards those far from God but close to them(Luke 14:12-14).

  • Resources, teaching and equipping for Biblical hospitality, and modeling of Biblical hospitality primarily by Elders and in Small Groups.

If then, as a church community, we are living in the rhythms above and therefore moving towards Jesus, we can prayerfully, humbly, and expectantly hope to see God move among us.
