Lansdowne Elementary School sits directly across the street from our church building in Lansdowne. LES is a Title One school, which in its simplest terms means that it is a school with needs that are beyond the needs of a non Title One school. While there are many areas in which we plan to begin to engage with this school, the first and simplest area of need where we can engage as a church family is in providing backpacks for the upcoming school year. This opportunity has opened up to us (along with a few other opportunities, which will be announced soon) in the last week or so, and we want to engage in this need as much as we can before the start of school. Here is how this will work:
- Sun, Aug 12th, 2018: We announce this need to our congregation during our Sunday Worship Gathering.
- Sun, Aug 19th & 26th: We collect backpacks during our Sunday Worship Gathering.
- Wed, Aug 29: We deliver the backpacks to Lansdowne Elementary School.
As you may be aware, MD "Tax-Free Week" kicks off on August 12 and backpacks are part of the qualifying items. We can take advantage of this to purchase extra backpacks with the potential tax savings! Here is the info from the Comptroller of MD Website regarding backpacks:
"The first $40 of a backpack or bookbag purchase is also tax-free"

School begins on Tuesday, September 5th, so our hope is that our backpacks will be available to bless families who have not been able to purchase one for their child as school starts.
As a congregation, I am asking you to consider purchasing an extra backpack or two(or as many as you can!) as you are out during the next few weeks. I am hopeful that we can collect 200 backpacks as a church family. Let's bless the families of Lansdowne Elementary together as a way of bringing the Kingdom of God into our geography!
